Marc Jacobs, a name synonymous with luxury fashion, has had quite the life. His formative years were spent under the guidance of his Grandmother after his father’s death. A woman who would allow him to grow and flourish as the iconic designer he is today.
Despite the freedoms afforded to him during his teen years, he maintained a strong focus on his dreams of becoming a designer. By the age of 15, he was attending the High School of Art and Design and, after school, working at the upscale clothing boutique Charivari. Here he designed sweaters for the store, between folding clothes and dressing mannequins, and this work helped Jacobs land a place at the coveted Parsons School for Design.
Jacobs succeeded in standing out from his peers and went on to win both the Perry Ellis Gold Thimble Award and Design Student of the Year at graduation. He then went on to become the youngest designer ever to win the Council of Fashion Designers of America Perry Ellis Award for New Fashion Talent and the prestigious 1992 CFDA prize for Womenswear Designer of the Year. It was this critical acclaim combined with a conflict of artistic freedom and commercialism at Perry Ellis that encouraged him to strike out on his own. He started his company with longtime business partner Robert Duffy and the Marc Jacobs label was born.
Marc Jacobs continues to push the boundaries of high fashion and design coveted garments and shoes that everyone wants. With a focus on providing fashion for all, Marc offers accessible price points through shoes, perfume and cosmetics meaning everyone can enjoy a piece of his aesthetic.
