Culture - Wedding Season

With the lengthening days, apple blossom and cool sunshine of Spring comes the inevitable flurry of weddings as the season gets well and truly underway. Cue panic at what to wear! Dress codes can be an inevitable mine-field of confusion, so we've created a handy breakdown of their meanings and suggestions at what to wear to ensure you arrive suitably, and stylishly, dressed for the occasion!

"White Tie"
The most formal of all dress codes. Ladies can dress to impress in a formal floor-length evening gown. Gents: a tuxedo, long black jacket with tails, formal white shirt, white vest and bow tie, white gloves and black formal shoes.

"Black Tie"
Usually indicative of an evening event, this is still a particularly formal dress code. Ladies can go dressy and wear a formal floor-length gown, or short cocktail dress (still unsure of required dress-length then why not text a bridesmaid for confirmation?) Gentlemen: a tuxedo, black bow tie, black vest or cummerbund, and formal black shoes. Summer weddings may also allow a white dinner jacket and black tuxedo trousers.

"Formal" or "Black Tie Optional"
Something slightly less formal than black tie, yet still a formal enough event for a tuxedo to be appropriate should you wish to wear one. Ladies: a long dress, dressy separates, or a formal cocktail dress and gents: a tuxedo or formal dark suit, white shirt and tie.

"Dressy Casual"
Take your cues from the time of the event: darker, more formal colours are appropriate for an evening wedding; opt for light colors and fabrics for a daytime event. Ladies: a cocktail dress or a long, dressy skirt and top. Gentlemen: a suit and tie, dark or light depending on the season and time of day.

Lucky for you, this indicates the wedding will likely be held outdoors or on the beach, hence a more laid-back dress code. However, note that jeans, shorts, tanks and trainers will never be socially acceptable attire to a wedding! Ladies: a summer sundress provides the perfect outfit option. Gents: dress pants or chinos with a button-down shirt, tie (though not necessary), and sweater.
